Since 2014, practitioners within the wide and diverse field of Authentic Movement have celebrated International Authentic Movement Day on October 4th in small and large local and virtual groups or solo forms. More recently, Nina Kungurova, a teacher of the Discipline of Authentic Movement, has hosted an annual online gathering. What began during covid as a way to connect with her students and other Russian-speaking practitioners, has expanded to include English translation and to welcome folks from all around the world.
What a great way to transcend borders and celebrate our global connection!
This year on International Authentic Movement Day, Nina will be joined by Annie Geissinger, Joan Webb and Paula Sager who were the co-editors and publishers of A Moving Journal (1994 – 2006). In advance of the internet and social media, A Moving Journal offered a shared space of inquiry for the diverse and international field of Authentic Movement practitioners.
This legendary journal was published for 12(!) years, and it became the first public place where Authentic Movement practitioners from different countries wrote articles, discussed questions about practice, and shared their discoveries.
We hope that many subscribers, including those who contributed articles, poems, artwork, and photos to A Moving Journal, will be present at this online gathering!
And if you don’t know about A Moving Journal, we invite you to join us and remember together a big time in the history of the development of the community of practitioners!
October 4th is the birthday of Mary Whitehouse (1911-1979), who laid the body-focused groundwork for this inner-sourced approach to movement.
Last year, through Nina’s inspired action and the collective efforts of the authentic movement community, a trove of old photographs resurfaced of Mary Whitehouse and some of her students from the late 1960s, which led Nina to connect with five women who graciously came forward to share memories of working with Mary Whitehouse.

More recently, on the anniversary of Janet Adler’s passing, Nina was able to find the eight women who appeared in Janet’s 1988 film, Still Looking, inviting them to share their experiences of working with Janet and participating in the film.

These events have provided an incredible opportunity to witness and be part of the love and inspiration spreading and reaching through the generations.
