Honoring Mary Starks Whitehouse

October 4th 2021, 12:00 – 1:30 pm EST, online.

Seven years ago, I was sitting next to Elizabeth Reid at Aileen Crow’s 85th birthday party in New York City. Aileen had been an inspiring teacher, beloved by all of us gathered at this event. She had also introduced many of us to Authentic Movement.

In the spirit of celebration, Elizabeth and I hatched the idea of an International Authentic Movement Day to be held on October 4th, the birthday of Mary Starks Whitehouse (1911-1979), whose teaching and writing laid the essential foundation for the inner-sourced approach to movement that came to be known as Authentic Movement.

This year marks the 110th anniversary of Mary’s birth and something special has been planned!

Nina Kungurova, a teacher of the Discipline of Authentic Movement based in Moscow, Russia, will be hosting a gathering of the international community of Authentic Movement practitioners. No matter what part of the world you live in, if you practice Authentic Movement you are invited to join in a space of gratitude for Mary, a celebration of all that has grown and developed over many years into a diverse and vibrant field.

Bonnie Morrissey and I will be joining Nina in sharing insights regarding Mary’s legacy and the special quality of movement and presence she explored. In honor of the occasion, we have invited Janet Adler to offer some memories of Mary as her teacher. We will share this video recording of Janet during our gathering.

We welcome you to join this celebration. To be together in a world-wide circle. To thank Mary…and all of your own teachers. And if it suits you, please bring a lighted candle or flowers. We will have time for a shared ritual of practice together.

The event will be bilingual, in Russian and English. Registration is required.
To register, please send a personal email with your name and where you’ll be joining from  (town or city or country) to, and we will send you a link to the event.

There is no charge for participation. If you would like to make a donation, to help cover Nina’s costs of organizing and providing a highly experienced translator for this event, you can register with her at

Hope to see you on October 4th!
